Inverse Projection

We usually understand the role of perception as starting with a projection, a flattening of the three dimensional world into two dimensional impressions. However even a perceptual system that has never experienced the three dimensional world directly but only through sporadic snapshots of things, can be used to reconstruct three dimensional objects that are constrained to maximally resemble something from certain points of view.

In this series we are using AIs trained to recognize objects from photographs in order to drive the arrangement of objects in three dimensional space so that the AIs can recognize them as a specific thing from specific angles.

Here we show a series of small scale prototypes for sculptures as well as some of the process animations with various shape constraints.
